Shakyamuni Buddha preaching the Amida Sutra

Shakyamuni Buddha is enthroned in the centre, flanked by shaven-headed monks on the left and bodhisattvas wearing crowns and other ornaments on the right.

The scene is the Jeta Grove of Anathapindada's garden in Shravasti, India, near the Nepalese border. Shakyamuni Buddha raises his right hand with the palm turned outward, so forming the mudra of 'bestowing fearlessness' (abhayada-mudra). His left hand, with the plam turned upward, rests on his right foot, so forming the mudra of 'fulfilling one's wishes' (varada-mudra).

In this sutra Shakyamuni Buddha addresses Shariputra alone, who is kneeling before him.
